Need some spooky in your Halloween? How about a trip to the late, fearsome Newgate Prison, one of the settings for my new novella, Captain Andrew's Flying Christmas. The squalid prison existed in London, England until 1902 and was used to house people awaiting execution among other prisoners.

In 1836, Charles Dickens wrote, "as they (the people of London) pass one particular angle of the massive wall with a light laugh or a merry whistle, they stand within one yard of a fellow-creature, bound and helpless, whose hours are numbered, from whom the last feeble ray of hope has fled for ever, and whose miserable career will shortly terminate in a violent and shameful death."

One thing that struck me about the Newgate Prison experience was most prisoners were not allowed actual beds but just had straw mattresses on the floor. Pretty gross when you think about all the vermin that must have been moving around the floor. Unless you  had money to pay the guards, very little food or comfort would come your way. The prison was rebuilt in 1782 after being damaged in a riot and a class system was built into the very walls - a common section for your average prisoner, and a state section for those who had money to upgrade. Children lived in the prison too, with their incarcerated mothers.

You'll be happy to know that in my story, a prisoner escapes this terrible place, but only to be faced by a fearsome automan, my version of a Steampunk-style robot! But, since this is a tale with holiday warmth, all ends well after many adventures.

blurb:

Housemaid Linet Fenna would rather be an air pirate than a servant. When she finds the ladder to an airship dangling outside her garret window on Christmas Eve, 1892, she ascends to the skies above London on her late father’s flagship dirigible, the Christmas. The new captain is someone she never expected to see again, a dangerous, sexy foe. Is the Fenna family nemesis offering Linet her heart’s desire or a dastardly trap?

Captain Andrew’s motivations are as foggy as the coal-soaked sky. Prime Minister Gladstone’s Blockaders, a horde of automen and a teenage girl named Hatchet want Linet to fail in her quest to discover what happened to her missing family, but she is determined to have a happy Christmas.

This steampunk romance novella is currently available for the Amazon Kindle, on Smashwords, and will be loaded at other outlets shortly.

That prison sounds awful, I mean putting kids in there with their mothers? Sheesh!

On a happier note your book sounds kind of intriguing!

Hi Heather, Wow that prision looks creepy - almost haunted like and I can just imagine the horror those mothers and their children went through trying to survive.
