Can someone explain American Idol to me?

My husband forced me to "relax" and watch most of the American Idol finale last night. I had given it up about three weeks ago due to my schedule and inability to program our half-dead VCR. So, this is what confuses me:
Supposedly Melinda Doolittle was cut from the top 3 because most of the people who vote are supposed to be young and at 29 she was too old to get votes - so much for "this is a singing competition." That left the 17-year-old and 25-year-old contestants, and the youngest won in the end.
But, hello, if this is a young demographic watching, then why is so much of the karaoke nature of the competition skewed so old? Was it just me or was the majority of the music last night 60s-based? Don't get me wrong, Gladys Knight is amazing (saw her show in Las Vegas) and of course I love the Beatles. But shouldn't they make the music relevant to teenagers? Even Green Day has been around for a while. I really don't understand. No wonder the ratings were down!
Even earlier in the season, the youngest guest judges are my age (late 30s) and a decade or more into their careers. The judges complain when the contestants pick songs that are too old for them, but they force that situation most of the time. Why?
Just had to get that off my chest.
