I've been catching up on some reading while I've been recovering from the flu. I've learned I don't have much tolerance for hard-edged characters who have no vulnerability apart from sheer horniness. In other words, the only chink in their armor is their sex life. Boring! I ran across multiple examples of this in less than a week of reading.
But, I read Look-Alike by Rita Herron last night. It's a September 2006 Harlequin Intrigue, and I highly recommend it. You can still get it online though it wouldn't be in stores anymore. The characters are rough-edged, but have real vulerability and therefore you can sympathize with them. The really nice thing about the book is how much plot fits into such a short book. I was impressed, and it would be worth diagramming the story to see how much Herron packed into 236 pages. I tend to write plot-heavy myself so it's nice to see how well it can be done. Look-Alike will be going on my keeper shelf, so I can learn how the author packed in amnesia, twin issues, a mysterious research facility and a serial killer into a compelling romance. There are a lot of characters too, but you never confuse them. Great job!
