My husband and I were stuck in our car in a long ferry line yesterday and we didn't have much to do. He ended up taking out my novella draft and reading some of it. He very rarely reads fiction, and my first thought is of course to discount his thoughts. Interestingly enough however, he was able to tell me where my more stylistic choices stopped the action. Even someone who reads as little as he does can tell where the "flow" of the story is interrupted.
My first thought was to politely ignore what he was saying about a couple of spots, because I was making stylistic choices. But I realized when I took out what he said was slowing it down, he was right! Sometimes it is a good idea to have non-writers read your material. It can make it better!
I hope you had a great holiday. I am thoroughly off my diet, and plan to get off the couch and start exercising as soon as it warms up in here. Ha! There's still half a pumpkin pie in the refrigerator...
