Leggings

After a very serious day yesterday, and a contempletive morning reading the coverage of yesterday, I feel the need to blog about something relatively silly - fashion. My current novel project, The Grange, has a rich family at the center, so I had to buy lots of fashion magazines and figure out what they might be wearing. I had also listened to The Devil Wears Prada early this summer and eventually saw the movie too, which was lots of fun. All of this leads to the huge September fashion mags, wherein I discover the 80s are back!
Now, if I'd been paying attention, I'd have noticed the 80s were making their reappearance as early as March. I'm not sure how I feel about the return of leggings and shoulder pads, although all these mentions got me to finish editing a mystery short story set in the early 80s that I'd been sitting on and get it out for a submission round.
But, back to fashion. I was a teen in the 80s, and vividly remember all those leggings I was wearing in college and during my early working years. In fact, I was sent home from work on a rare casual day in the all-suit year of 1990, because the military green corduroy leggings I was wearing (under a long shirt and longer baggy sweater) were too revealing to my chauvinistic boss's eyes! As a Weight Watchers leader and member, I can happily report that I'm at a healthy weight again, but I'm nowhere near the 98 - 111 pounds I weighed back in the legging years. I remember them nostalgically, but don't think I'll be shopping for them!
