The latest news

I have had a day of good news! First, I finished the first draft of The Grange this morning. I'm sure I have a lot more to do, but I've been doing edits all along so I'm feeling optimistic. I also just received a contract offer for a Christmas short story I wrote. It will be published in Holiday in the Heart, an anthology from Highland Press. A number of writers I know have had stories with them, and I'm looking forward to being a part of it.
The nice thing about small presses is that you really feel like one of the family when you work with them. I'm now on multiple loops with Cerridwen Press authors, and I frequently get Highland Press updates from my friends who've sold to them. It's great to feel a part of something larger when we as writers spend so much time in a room alone, staring into our computer screens.
Of course, yesterday I was writing on a laptop in the backseat of a friend's car, plotting out chapter one of my next book, The Truth in Advertising, but mostly life for a writer isn't that communal. I enjoyed driving through the part of Washington where The Grange is set, then participating in a fire department's pancake breakfast and fundraiser. Little did they know I was creating a ton of fictional work for them as I burned down a mansion or two at the end of The Grange!
